JOINT MONITORING AND EVALUATION MISSION OF SALGAA PROJECTS

Women Empowerment: 2014 Monitoring Mission to Salgaa: Mats Available for Sale, Place an Order..

Exhibition of women empowerment Initiatives- September 2-3, Urru Stadium, Meru County, Kenya

TVT was introduced to the rural communities as an expert in grass root village development on 3rd of October, 2009. Over 10,000 people were in attendance. TVT used the occasion to reemphasize the need to put families at the centre of all rural development interventions. TVT pledges to continue working in close collaboration with community leaders; local government; development organizations; and political, religious and civic leaders in addressing the needs of the villages. Based on the past record in empowering villages, The Village Trust enjoys support from the entire community as it is viewed as the only avenue to financial independence by the rural folks.

TVT focuses on rural women and youth majority of who belong to the most marginalized group within developing nations’ population. TVT provides support in establishing, training and coaching self help groups whose objective is to invest their resources in income generating activities. TVT encourages members of the group to save by ensuring that the more the group saves the more it receives in terms of soft business loans from TVT’s revolving fund. TVT maintains a close monitoring of the business activities of the groups through their group leaders – in addition to frequent site visits - to ensure that loans are not used to defray personal expenses. Furthermore, by supporting village groups, TVT has been contributing to enhance social bonds and reduce security threats that are normally associated with poverty and unemployment.

TVT is empowering women and youth groups by supporting them with business funds and guidance to manage their income generating activities. This helps the groups generate self employment in addition to providing job opportunities for others in their villages. Through its business development strategy, TVT has conducted training for over 70 women groups and 15 youth groups TVT has also given soft loans from the current limited revolving fund to over 50 groups. The support is especially aimed at encouraging youth to channel their energy, creativity and good ideas into activities that guarantee them livelihood through income generation. Youth groups in the region are involved in cereal trading, bee keeping, fish and vegetable farming, tree planning, Jua Kali businesses and transportation. This does not only make them have money of their own but it also makes them have a say on the development issues of the region. The financial independence gives both the women and youth a voice in management of the village welfare due to the fact they are not dependent on anybody for their daily needs.

Through its business friendly approach, TVT has empowered youth to turn their energy and ideas into business opportunities. Women and youth are able access financial support for their business projects after having gone through adequate capacity building and intensive training on business development, planning and monitoring. Apart from empowering groups financially, TVT uses peer empowering strategy to support literacy, health (HIV/AIDs), environmental protection as well as better farming methods projects. TVT also supports the groups to access markets for their products through the network of supporters and partners.

The Village Trust (TVT) has been supporting communities and village groups, with emphasis on women and youth, in Kenya to address some of their challenges through appropriate interventions. Some of the activities TVT is supporting are geared towards income generation, awareness raising and campaigns against gender violence, female genital mutilation, child labour and general discrimination against the girl child. Through the support of TVT many women groups have been able to rediscover their potential to provide for their families and regain dignity that is taken away by being a beggar.

In order to showcase their achievements in the fight against poverty, TVT supported women groups are organizing an exhibition or show of their various projects. This women empowerment show will present an opportunity for the entire community and all people of good will to celebrate the hard work, commitment and determination of women to come out of poverty and contribute not only to the well being of their families but that of the country as a whole.

The women empowerment show will contribute towards raising of the visibility of existing female entrepreneurs, creating a climate that is favorable to female entrepreneurs, motivating and encouraging entrepreneurs to soldier on and enable them to learn new ways of fighting poverty. TVT intends to make the women empowerment show a yearly event for rural communities.
